I have found that they will run better with the MAF unplugged than with a faulty one still connected.  I also think that LR changed from basically only using the MAF for EGR purposes on the early ecus to include other fueling functions in the later ecus (I've had vehicles with both ecus and disconnecting the MAF produced different results) and that the manual was never updated to reflect the changes.  But there are other instances in the manual with incorrect information, perhaps stemming from differences between design and implementation.
