Welch plug in vac pump 300tdi
Hello good people (and others).
I'm about to do the vac pump repair to stop a huge oil leak. On the tute for it, a welch plug is mentioned. Is this exposed when the cap comes off the pump and does it normally need repair? If so, can you buy this plug or is sealing over it sufficient?

They're covering the two valves at the end of pump body. It's normally pretty clear if they need replacing or not (there will be oil leaking out of the end, rather than the edge).
I just did mine. There were bits of a broken circlip in the bore, and the piston seal was torn (from a broken circlip). Made up a new gasket put it back in to tide me over, and ordered a new pump from Paddocks.
The old one still gives good vacuum and brake, even though the bore is scratched, and the piston seal is torn. Also doesn't leak any more since the gasket was done.
My feeling is that once the bore starts leaking oil, it's also leaking vacuum, and will need replacement anyway. That was certainly the case in mine.

my understanding is the welch plug cant be renewed because of the valve mechanism behind them.........but a good bog/sealant on the outside of the old one will do the trick...do this when you replace the gasket etc and you should be right. My mechanic used some industrial sealant product on the leaking welch plug and it has been fine since then...,he did say that normal black/blue silastic type sealants may not be good enough.
