    Michelin replacement

I knackered one of my tyres on my P38a and went to get a replacement to be told they are no longer available - would I like to buy 5 new tyres instead? - gulp!

Anyone know where I can get a replacement in Melbourne? (255/65 R16)?

failing that, should I go for BFG ATs? and if so, where and at what cost?

I'm looking for a reasonable priced tyre for an unreasonably expensive to maintain RR (but I wouldn't change it for anything)

Don't know your needs but have found the Bridgestones a good alternative.

Before anyone recomends tyres. What sort of action does the rangie see. Mud, Sand, Rocks, All black top or what mix off road. eg 80% on and 20% off.

    Usage

sad to admit that the car hardly goes off road. I used to have an old classic that I never thought twice of taking off road, but I just can't bring myself to take the P38 through the rough stuff, especially with all those electrics

I'd be looking at HT tyres instead of AT's in that case.

They tell me they are better of road than a classic. Just dont drop it in a deep pond and it will be ok
Sounds like you are 90% on road and 10% off. You will not want A/Ts or M/Ts as will wear bad, noisy and slipery on wet black top. What tryes you go for depends on budget. You shouldn't need anything more agresive than a H/T. My mate put Coopers on his P38 3 yrs ago and loves them. I can't remember size but look wider than stock. Stay away from the cheap and nasty if you can.
I can't recomend tyres I've used here now as are A/Ts and M/Ts but have had a good run out of BFGoodrich, Yokahama, Toyo, Some Bridgestone, Some Hancook, The cheap brands don't last of perform as well on black top.
How ever I do use some cheaper brands for hard off road work here.

If its a Michelin XPC you're after, they can still be bought.
I was quoted $495ea 4 months ago from a tyre guy nr the corner of Chiefly and Bell St in Preston, Melbourne (south side of Bell Street).

I cannot remember the name right now, but Im going to Supercheap in the morning which is just on the other side of Chiefly so I'll have a look and update the details here.

Other news is that BFG do not make a 255/65/R16 sized AT tyre. bit surprising really which is why I ended up with these...

If you want a good highway tyre, research Maxxis and Pirelli Scorpion, the Maxxis are std rubber on all Peter Lennox Mercedes now, mate of mine has them on CLK430 and the ML270 CDL 4WD and swears by them.

I originally looked just at getting a set of more rugged off road tires - so I bought a spare set of rims - (16" instead of 18") and the plan was I would use the rugged tyres for play and keep the road tyres for the road as I was told that the more rugged tyres would not wear well and cause horrid road noise.

So I got a set of BFG's All Terrain T/A - in a 235/70 R16 - same original (+/- a gnats) to the dia of the originals - and as it happens they are also within a gnats dia as the 255/65 R16 @ 29.1" as against 29.0".

Well after running on them for 9 months - almost zero wear, no noticible road noise.........

......and I dont have to change the wheels at the w/end if I want to go bush.

To me they are the best of both worlds........and I still have the almost new set of the originals - on the original rims.

Ive been running my P38 since 1999.
Ive gone thru heaps of tyres.
Currently I have BFG Mud Terrains on because I like to offroad a lot, and down here in Melbourne we have muddy tracks. But, they are really **** tyres on the road. Breaking distance is crap, they slide around corners etc.. I used to have all terrains, but they are not as good offroad hence my swap to the mudders.

I have also had Bridgestones, Michellins but the best for on road performance in my opinion have been the original Pirellis. If I were mostly a road person (as I was when I was in Europe), I would use them. They were so much better on the road than any other tyres I have used.

    I always run XPC's.
They are quiet and were standard equipment.

Pirelli are on my mates P38, he swears by them. He went a tad narrow as in 235/70 or 65 from memory. that has reduced tyre noise a bit and improved fuel due to less friction.
These are his words and he swears by it.

    Kind of makes sense really.
Best of luck, I know they cost a fortune.
