Drop Arm Ball Joint Assembly for Defender

    Hi there,

I am replacing the ball joint on the drop arm and I am completely stumped. The part number for my 1994 Defender is RBG000010 <B>.

How do I assemble all of this. If anyone knows please let me know ASAP.

    Thx

i drilled a hole in the cover plate and installed a grease nipple, not sure if it is needed ut thought it was a good mod at the time

Not needed as long as the rubber boot remains intact. But if the boot is damaged, then failure will follow quite soon, and being able to grease it will prolong the life in this situation.

Also note that the boot is liable to damage from sticks, as is the boot on the joint at the other end of the drag link, and to a lesser extent, the joints on the track rod. But all of these are easier to replace.

Thanks guys, makes much more sense. In the new kit there is a metal ring with a shoulder which I cant see on the illustrations being fitted. I know where all the other parts go thanks to the detailed illustrations thx.

The part I am referring to is the shiny round object in the bottom row second from left in the picture of the new parts in the photo illustration.

From memory when I did mine that was to retain the rubber boot 'if' the lip in the arm was damaged - anyway I didn't use it, and I drilled the centre of the cover for a grease nipple.

Thanks to all for the help. Quite a tricky job I must say. The rubber seal broke so I fitted the backplate and sealed with silicone from the outside. Hopefully this will be ok.

Where can I get the grease nipples to fit on the back plate?

Any motor supplier or engineering supplies. You will have to tap the hole for whatever thread you get on the grease nipple.
