    300tdi Timing Belt Change Cost

    Hello,

Can anyone tell me what you currently pay to have a timing belt change on a 98 D1 300tdi?

It is coming up to 60K on the belt (200K on the motor) and I am in the Canberra area (but will travel).

    Thanks.

I would let it go to 80-100k unless you do a lot of towing or muddy offroad work, kit approx. $300.

I've had mine done about 5-6 times and the biggest bill was the last one $550. Pat

Guess you had a new timing cover as well, parts alone are $250-$300 odd if you dont need the cover replaced.

Belt is $90 from Bursons or the like,

Tensioner pulleys, use the 200Tdi ones and you wont have to replace them again and the whole kit including crank seal, pulleys and belt (but you will have to use 300Tdi Crank seal and belt) is roughly $300 from most LR suppliers mine came from LRA when we changed to the 200Tdi pulley.

Sprocket pulleys I dont know, Ive never had to replace them and I havnt heard of others replacing them but some people might do it par the course.

Timing cover from LR will set you back $480 or there is a thread on Coopers doing change over units for $280 but the crank seal, fan drive flange and bearing will set you back around $50 apparently (I was quoted $30 for the bearing and the fan drive flange is EL Falcon apparently and available from Bursons or the like) but you need a press to remove and fit the bearing.

So it depends on how much you need to replace.

    Break down :

    Belt only - $90
Kit including tensioner + Seal + Belt - $300 approx
Timing cover - +$480 new or $280ish change over

Be careful with doing this, not all toothed belts are the same.

They may look the same but the GP belts are not made to be used as timing belts and for the sake of the extra $60 for a proper Dayco/Gates belt you are able to be a bit more sure it is the right thing and wont cost you a top end rebuild when it lets go.
