Also... What age is the Freelander?
The reason I ask is that if you're unfamiliar with the specifics of the Freelander drive train, things like the transmission wind up and uneven wear on the tyres often get mis-interpreted as a knackered VCU.
The easiest way of testing the VCU on Freelander 1 is to jack up one of the rear wheels, stick the tyre iron on one of the wheel nuts and see if you can rotate the wheel (you might need to stand on it!). If it moves, your VCU is OK, if it doesn't move then chances are your VCU is seized.

As described in the Freelander section this component is prone to failing causing further potential damage.
To check the condition of your unit :
1) Jack up one rear wheel 2) put a 18" bar through the rear prop UJ and try to turn it. 3) it should turn slowly with resistance
Please note even a good one will be quite tight. A siezed one will feel like the handbrake is dragging when reversing slowly on full lock.
This product is new and is sold on an outright basis.

Yes - I know all about them. But more details on what is the issue etc is needed.
Camel Landie helped me a lot when I had my issues - so between him and I - I am sure we can answer any questions.
I fixed mine 3 years ago - and it has been great ever since - but knowledge is all knowing and can prevent major ptoblems.
