EGT should be safe for spikes up to 750 but sustained (i.e. towing into a headwind or a long hill) 600-650 is better. I don't know what the ZD30 does stock but I imagine 450 would be exceeded on a flat road cruise.
Yeh every one has different idears Im only going off what ive read on the Patrol forum, I think alot of them seem to play it pretty safe, Ive got no Idear what temp and boost im getting all I know is it goes unreal for a 4 banger in a heavy wagon that is as stock as the day it was made and it took 247000klm before it had a failure, One advantage I have is when it holed a piston I fixed it myself and diddnt have to pay the $7000 to $12000 some people have been spending for motors, First I will put in the guages see what im running read around then maybe do some fine tunning, If it lets go again my next 4x4 will be another discovery but a manual TD5 without SLS and ACE, cheers

I followed a rather long post on 4WD Action forum a while back and the problem seems to be (IMHO) that a fault with the EGR valve causes a false signal to the MAF (thru the ECU) causing overfuelling resulting in high combustion temperatures, causing piston meltdown.
A friend owned one, a 2004 model which he used to tow a double horse float, he got a call from local Nissan dealer to bring his vehicle in for an adjustment.
The adjustment turned out to be to snip a section off the dipstick and remark the "Full" line which resulted in more oil in the engine.
At 30,000klms while towing the horse float, he noticed a drop in power, followed by clouds of white smoke and the engine shutting down. had it towed to local Nissan dealer who dismantled engine to find #3 piston partially holed and #4 piston with no top. Local Nissan said he had put in crap fuel and it wasn't covered under warranty, they changed tack when friend had fuel analysed and found to be A1, they then said he had been thrashing it and overloading it.
After 6 months of legal and personal approaches Nissan replaced the engine at their cost of $15,000, but still wanted friend to pay for labour, even though it was still under warranty, finally friend got Nissan back, but he had to pay for oil and coolant and filters, lousy bastards, Regards Frank.

My mate says the common rail blows MORE smoke than his old one(2008) also uses more fuel,, ( theres a D'oh in there somewhere,,) pulls taller gearing as it makes more power, which makes it that much harder to shift car trailers uphill from the lights,,,

    They tow VERY well,,
    souless,, but well.

The measurements are going to swing around a bit with changes in weather alone. Which is why I'm far more interested in the pyro heading towards melt-down than any other instrument.

They don;t seem to "swing around", mine is post, its sustained temps that will kill, so the pyro wont be swinging around under sustained load anyhow

I have a different view on these Patrols.

Thats for almost all Patrols, they are driven to their demise by their drivers.

Have you ever taken notice, they race to the lights, race from the lights and never ever like being overtaken.

My best mate has a 08 Patrol and he fits the bill perfectly, he is a large man and for some reason thinks it should perform like a 350Z.

Patrol drivers for some reason have a dislike to anything Land Rover related and consider themselfes Landie Recovery vehicles.

    Am I generelising too much.

Well, I was away with a club with 7 Patrols, an ancient Mercedes Gelandewagon and me in my old RRC 92.

Only after I made it through both their bog hole and sandtrap while listening to my I-pod and the air-con did they acknowledge me.
Checked the car out as we had plenty of time, only the Merc and me plus the tray top Nissan made it through.

They are a brainwashed breed, some were very approachable but one eyed.

The day was an absolute laugh as we spend all day getting out and only thanks to a local farmer who helped us with his tractor.
I bet that will never be written in any forum.

Next time in traffic watch the occupants and their actions and driving habits.

I bet you I am right 80% of the time.

Pretty sure they are good blokes, just that usually overweight people pushing equally overweight cars too hard.

    IMHO.

Retarded nonsense, people should stop tarring "other vehicle" drivers like this, LR people are the first lot to get on the high horse when someone mentions rover relability or what ever other stereotype, yet are the quickest to stereo type everyone else

Its the upper heights of hypocrosy

I could introduce you to a mass of Nissan drivers, who are far from that, what a load of ****
