The ZD30's I've driven (pathfinders/terranos) are not wastegated, they have a variable vane turbo.
The exhaust vane position on these is controlled by the ECU (via a vacuum valve and actuator).

In my case the values came out perfect. One of the reading was supposed to be in the range 0.7-1.1 volts, it was 0.9 volts. The other was also smack in the middle of the intended range.

Easy to check and worth doing if you can find the reference figures.

mate, if you have the web link or the details, I would love to get hold of them. I am about to buy a bunch of these from Brunswick Diesels here and send them back to my Sydney branch. Someone at HO has sourced an ECU and we want to run them up on the dyno to check them. As we buy them with the MAF, they need to be fully checked out and either tagged for service secondhand, core parts or for remanufacture as long engines.

Ok, so the TD5 has a physical limiter on the wastegate itself, and then the ecu detects overboost and can cut fueling if it detects an overboost. So there would have to be two failures before it does a "nissan".

Overboost is not a problem on diesels. Underboost is.

These are from the Y61 specifications post. There are also a number of other posts re fault codes if you search.
As the previous owner of one that went bang there was a lot of smoke but also a metallic rattle to go with it. Following the failure the vehicle was virtually undriveable.

I'll keep looking, but I haven't found a ZD30 one yet.
I have seen the D22 Navara FSM, but european where they had the TD25 engine, then the YD25 with no ZD30.
The terrano/pathfinder was the R50 model, starting around 98.
