I'm told they should be replaced at 100000 K or less if a lot of slow off road work is normally done by the vehicle.
If you are confident in stretching it out to 100000K do it.
Hi, I have just paid $1600 to put in a new fuel pump and clean. I have been told by mechanic i need to replace my timing belt at 90,000 km. I am at 90 745km already, how long can i go before i need to change it. I need to drive from Melbourne to Perth in mid november 08?
Thanks![]()

And you would have a 300Tdi ?
No, its a 1997 Freelander 2.5l petrol auto
Most cars with belts are generally changed at the 100thou K mark
The reason is to ensure that it is changed before the life of the belt has expired .... so as no risk / damage of sending "suddenly stopped valves" being embedded into the piston's
Which will = new motor

There is no such car. In 1997 it was either a 2.0 diesel or a 1.8 litre petrol 4 cylinder and there was no auto on either - the diesel is every 80,000km and the 1.8 litre petrol is every 60,000km (source is my workshop manual).
From about 2000 the 2.5litre V6 became available - I do not have the information on it but it is the same familiy of engines as the 1.8 4 cylinder so is likely to be 60,000km - there was a auto available on this engine.
There was also the TD4 Diesel with an auto but it has a chain and does not need replacing.
I suspect your car is not a 1997 model but a post 2000 V6 auto. There are ba few people on here with these cars so someone will be able to tell you what the change interval is - but you need to specifically and accurately indicate what we are talking about - there are a large number of different landies.

It would be highly advisable to have the belt replaced sooner rather than later.
I can site an example of a Holden Vectra V6, belts are to be changed every 80,000km. At 82,000km while driving along the M4 here in Sydney, the car came to grinding halt.
Fortunately it was not my car, but the cost of not having the belt attended to by the due time was now $6000 in engine damage
So, don't drive to Perth if you have not had the belt changed, or you might come to a grinding (literally) halt in the middle of the desert!!!

Hi Garry,
You are right, it is a 2001 V6 petrol auto freelander, I got the yr mixed up with my last car. Do you know who i could call regarding the cost of replacement of the belt and when it should have been done?
I am in St Kilda VIC.
Also the mechanic who serviced my car said best to sell it at 120,000km as hoses start splitting. I really love my freelander, and dont really want to sell it but I am heading out to the central deserts for work next year and need a car that wont break down. What do you think?
Thanks for that!
