Thread: Transfer case problem

I was hoping for one or maybe two responses; something along the lines of, "Yeah, they do that a bit'" or "Never seen that before".

I have had the occasional mechanical problem over the years that no-one else seems to have ever heard of.

I was just a bit curious to know whether anyone else had come across the same thing. Maybe I should have asked.

I've thought of a few possible explanations for the lack of responses.

1. Everyone (except me) knows it's a common problem.
2. Everyone (except me) knows it's just a one off.
3. Everyone (except me) thinks it's boring.
4. The only comment people though worth making was,"It didn't happen without pics."
5. Everyone has me on their ignore list.
6. Almost all of the above.

7. No one knows what set screw, arm, shaft you were talking about.

I haven't heard of this being an issue before, but then again .......

Don't fret, it happens sometimes. I have had to tighten numerous ones over the years, and some even slip off the splined end when the CDL is engaged they are so loose

I knew what you were on about, but was too slack to post a 'well done, glad it's fixed', which is what I have done now.

HI mate, make the most of it an party the night away, its not very often that a car repair works out to be the cheapest option, or even an option that costs nothing as in your case. Good to hear. Matt

I now know that mine must have been loose for all the time I have owned it - 112,000 to 150,000, because it now feels more positive than it ever did.

I guess that is yet another demonstration of the value of experience or at least the problem with lack of familiarity with a particular vehicle.

I suspect that if someone who owned a Defender (with a tight set screw) had driven mine they would have picked it up straight away.

Not only that, but it happened in my own driveway. I can't think of a better place.

So it happened within reach of my toolbox and cost me nothing.

The hardest part of the job was getting the pin back through the hole in the external lever on that shaft. It's in one of those places where you can't get your fingers in unless you are deformed and there is no room for any sort of tool to grip the pin.

the grub screws that holds the shifter ball guides on the selector rods of the LT77 can do the same thing and when one of them comes loose you get no gear selection if your lucky you can jag the back or front of one of the other selectors and get a gear but once its in you cant get it out.

I thought of posting a well done but only caught the thread when I was short on time.
