EU3 versions of the engine (in the Disco at least) have a butterfly but it is to encourage exhaust gas flow through the EGR valve back into the engine, rather than to control the flow of fresh air.

Thanks for the tip Captain
I cleaned the MAF element on my TD5 Disco ( year 2000 200K), with a cotton bud and some contact cleaner.
My car is now going much better. It's running smoother and pulls better from low revs and is reving out better.
Well worth taking 10 minutes to do. Well pleased:D
Cheers
Andy
Disconnect it and take TD5 for a drive around the block flooring it. You will see what I mean. (MAKE SURE ENGINE IS AT NORMAL TEMP FIRST)

so my car has gone back to only getting 600 klms out of a tank on my TD5. iy has a new MAF about 10 months ago and only done about 12,000 klms since. when its cold its really flat trying to back out of driveway seems to be down on power, but not so much when it warms up. with these readings on 50kg/?? etc nanocom at idle, is that through a pc or can you get the nanocom to display those readings?. reason i ask, my laptop screen has died so i can only use it with external monitor, makes it hard to take in the car :(
also when its cols it overboosts to buggery, can only get about half throttle before it overboosts and shuts down for a second. its an Auto.
i have a Tombie ECU onboard and no EGR, 3" exchaust, bigger aftermarket intercooler etc.
p.s. tried cleaning MAf and no difference. for a while it used to make a difference "I THINK". really hard to tell if it actually made a difference in drive of the vehicle. usually could tell when it started using too much fuel it was time to clean the MAF. maybe it dead again.
i miust be a noob, i can only get
Rpm, Turbo pressure , Coolant Temp, Batt voltage
Yep, that's instrument mode. I have that on startup too (who doesn't!) ;)
Press any of the buttons to quit out of that, and go into the td5 engine section. I think it's "read fuelling" that you need to get to, and then scroll through to get to the air flow readings. Can't remember off the top of my head, but it should be reasonably apparent. :)
The other (arguably safer) option, is to set up the Nanocom to log the fuelling inputs from the ECU, and then download that onto a computer, and read off the values from the graph viewer software that comes with the Nanocom. That will give pretty much everything going through the ECU, (rpm, road speed, accel%, MAF, etc...) so you can compare properly. ;)
Suppose I should look at mine
:)

ok, checked today AFM on nanocom readout, at idle its around 58-60
at fulll throttle its up to 650. i did notice very pronounced a surge at full throttle which i have noticed before but seems to be more common of late. 1 second on 1 second off repeats while full throttle like it is losing 20-30%power, then gaining it back then losing it.
Its different to the full overboost shutdown with zero power i get when the engine is cold. would i be close guessing the boost regulator ?
I know this is an old thread, but rather than start another, my disco needs a new MAF. Id like a genuine one but cannot afford one for a bit since buying tyres, i need to save up again. Will one of the cheap aftermarket ones be ok for the time being? the ones on ebay. I guess they would work better than the one on my car now? LOL
