    Jammed Ignition Discovery

    Hi all

    just a bit of info for anyone who suffers the jammed ignition syndrome on a Disco.

    Our's first jammed a couple of years ago ... got out a locksmith (under advice of LR Dealer) ... fixed it for around $250.

    Jammed again last week ... rang the locksmith ... they said can't fix it twice ... will be $600!!!!

    Rang one LR parts dealer... said it has to go to dealer for key to be recoded ... said it would be $1800!!! Ouch!

    Rang another spare parts place, said they could sell me new ignition barrel for around $200.

    Then got on to another guy who sold me the part for $175, and gave me excellent instructions on how to replace it.

    Got it home, 20 mins later it was on.

    The only downside is that we have the one key that fits the doors with the remote on it, and another key that fits the ignition... but hey... considering the saving... who cares!!!!

    Any decent locksmith should have been able to free up your original lock, even if it had been done before.

    The same locksmith can also recode your new lock to your old keys too.

    Squirt some graphite powder in there every year to keep the tumblers sliding nicely.

    ... like Scouse tells it....

    AND ... if you are mechanically inclined, it is quite possible to carefully dissassemble the lock (not dropping he tumblers & springs (tape the barrell with sticky tape with the key IN)), and then individually clean the burrs off each tumbler with a needle file, reassemble & lubricate ( a locksmith's job in fact)...

    try it with your old barrell

    those initial locksmith quotes were a real ripoff - try someone else

    glad to hear the result was reasonable

    Mine jammed up today as i left work to come home, it was the steering lock that wouldnt disengage and i didnt have any tools with me except a tiny screwdriver .
    Luckily i had a bag full of recovery gear in the back, removed the shroud around the column and gave the lock a few taps with a 4.7T rated shackle - all good now .
