what colour is the smoke ?
Hi,
my discovery is smoky on acceleration the harder the acceleration the more smoke it drives great and does not smoke on tick over or normal driving , it has just had a complete new head and new everything in the head , valve clearances have been set .
Any pointers would be helpful before I go changing injectors etc.for no reason.
Regards Jon.

There is a puff of black smoke on start up which goes away immediately and then when I watch the wife drive off there is a bit of black smoke but again very light I've noticed more when I am driving and accelerating harder that I can see smoke in the rear view mirror.
The car has a 150 000 on it , so I'm presuming it's not burning oil the level is not dropping.
it sounds like normal behaviour to me so far....
know the history of the vehicle?
has the pump been tweaked?
off the showroom floor they are tuned to meet pollution level requirements and can be made to be much more responsive with a few tweaks which is what often happens and one result of those tweaks is better fuelling so the smoke as long as it is black really isnt much to be worried about as a general rule.
do you ever tow anything around that weighs around the tonne mark for any distance?
if not i would suggest you invest $100 in the CEM value pack... a search for cem will bring up some interesting threads and some differing points of view for you to digest.
my personal opinion is the 200/300tdi needs a heavy haul from time to time to clean the bores and rings etc and the cem treatment can be nearly as effective if that isnt possible for you.
my opinion, others will beg to differ no doubt....

I agree with inciser, black smoke = fuel our 200tdi has had the pump tweeked and it blows more smoke then standard (smoke on start up and exceleration)

Thanks for the info.
very helpful , I do not know the history of the vehicle unfortunately but it seems like the pump tweak is the likely cause so not too worried there , and it does go fairly well compared to another that i test drove when I was originally looking to buy one.
Thanks again ...
Get the injectors checked, similar symptoms went away when I replaced the injectors on my old 300 TDi that had 180,000 km on the clock at the time.
Mine has almost 200k on the clock now and Ive noticed a bit of smoke in the following car's headlights under acceleration at night . I haven't been able to tell if it is black or white smoke. This thread has reminded me to ask somebody to follow me and verify.
Injectors aren't cheap are they? I know there is a thread here in the archives about ordering them in from England at a cost much less than what Oz parts suppliers will quote you.
I agree it sounds like fuel.
I had my pump tweeked by Bruce Davis in Febuary after it needed a rebuild and it now blows a heap more smoke than it used to. Before i could never really see any smoke on acceleration but now i can see a trail behind me, its not thick dense smoke like a clapped out hilux but its visible.
Bruce tells me when they are tweeked they are tweeked so that if the owner wants to they can opt for a manifold and turbo tweek that helps get more air in, once this is done it blows little smoke because of the increased air flow. Matt
