Could it have something to do with temperature sensing?

Hi ChrisM, I too had this problem once when I dismantled my dash. The orange thing you are talking about is like rubber or plastic and the hoses push into it - is that correct. The hoses virtually slipped out of this when I was pulling the dash apart. Not knowing which one came from what hole I decided to start vehicle and kept moving them around and pushing buttons on the controller until the proper functions worked. These vacuum lines control the vacuum solenoids that operate the flaps for fresh/recirculate etc. I should have recorded which went where but didnt so thats about all I can suggest - good luck...Brian

What Brian said. I tried to find this info, but the dealers, experts I tried couldn,t help me. When the rubber thingy eventually disintergrated I used spare ARB locker air solenoids and 3 switches to control them. You could then have vents in any position you wanted. I got the solenoids for nothing though.
