    Glowing manifolds

There was a post either here or in the Range Rover section not too long ago about someone with glowing exhaust manifolds on a V8.

Saw a customer of mine today who had a pair of 3.9 heads from an engine that suffered from the same thing and subsequently bent the heads.
Turned out it had a 40deg retard on the dizzy!!
Was just wondering if it was the same guy???

    different guy then.

Retarded, not advanced. Aparently the dizzy was one tooth out and was basically sparking nearly half way down the power stroke! He aparently said, "It sounded funny, a little bit like a drag car without all the power..."
Think the timing matched the inteligence of the owner.... retarded!!!!

    Hi Matt et al,

This prob should be a new thread, but is to do with ignition advance. Have 350 Chev on gas, been to the moon and back.

Since I have had it I've had the vac advance tube hooked up to the manifold rather than the usual port on the carb body as advised by someone that had a worked 351 on gas in a Jeep that needed 2 big Impco convertors, etc.

I know this gives more advance at lower revs, and less at higher. I'm timing it with the vac tube on, at 5-600 rpm at 10' advance. This is where it seems to run best (poke and economy).

Q is should I be looking at total advance at various rpm, setting advance with vac disconnected, etc??

    TIA, DL

Do you have a reason to play, If its most happy where you've set it, then that is optimal timing for the curve available in that dizzy

How much time and effort do you want to put in?? and what do you wanna achieve??

I recently set up my Disco with a 4.6 with Wolf & Coil packs with the help of Lucas, and in the process put the trigger wheel 1 hole out in the set up giving me about 40Deg retard .............. Extractors were constantly glowing Cherry red, bellowed a real un-healthy sound went very poor and the exhaust radiated heat like no Tomorrow !!! "NOT HAPPY JAN" after countless hours from Luke, Taff and myself getting it done and now after only about 600km cost me a head Gasket (Hopfully not a Head!) along with a hell of a lot of Disappointment ! And Disco now been off the road for over 6 months !
