    Spray painting advice needed.

It's very sad that in my General Nurse training, my Science degree, my graduate diploma, my masters degree or even the social work degree that I started, none of them taught me anything about automotive spray painting.

    So much for higher education!

The problem, I was painting a set of newly grit blasted wheel rims for a series 3, firstly with hi-build universal etch primer then next day acrylic primer as a second coat. Hi-pressure/venturi system gun.

Some of it was great, bonded well and other parts, particularly in the dish of the rims, was like I'd sprayed sand on the metal and the slightest rub with wet-n-dry it came off. (first day was quite hot and I diluted the paint as per instructions, later I diluted more and it was better.)

    What am I doing wrong?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Sounds like you have "dusted" parts of the job with overspray/too much air pressure.
When you can,go modern, grab one of those cheap "upside down" gravity feed guns off fleabay. The comparison is like a spraycan and a normal spraygun. After you use one you wont go back!!!!

I am no expert in this field (in fact far from it), but what I have found, by the cock up several times rule is that you take the original dilution requirements and multiply by 2 or three.

Then do, lots more very quick light coats, with leaving a decent amount of time in between.

Yes it takes about 3 times longer than it should, but for me it works.

More often than not the warmer it is, the less thinning is warranted as it dry's off to quickly.
To get a nice shiny wet finish you need to live a little dangerously and apply the paint thick and wet. Well it's one way and it takes some practice.

hi there, i have also spray painted 5 sandblasted series2 wheels i also done them in acrylic flat olive drab for camo colours. I dont know what paint original landrover used but enamel is supposed to be better. I used acrylic because i used the leftovers for the rest of camo job. I have sprayed three cars in acrylic but that doesnt make me an expert, although they came up very good. Your problem seems to be that the paint is drying before it hits the metal as you said it was a hot day it is a good idea to spray when outside temperature is around 22 degrees and spray in the shade as even on a cool day metal gets hot in the sun. from leyland

    Thanks Leyland

I have sprayed enamel before and it's very forgiving, however previously the paint had always stuck.

The choice for acryllic on this occasion is not mine, the rest of the car is painted in acryllic and the current owner is re-painting his other car with the same paint so offered to do my wheels at the same time.

The good thing about acryllic is that you can apply many coats and rub them back, something that's not possible with enamel when hardener has been used. Also in most states it's illegal to spray two pack enamel without a painting booth and special respirators.

As mentioned above - sounds like the air pressure was too high - the paint dried before hitting the surface. Or you didn't put the coat on wet enough - always a fine line between enough and a paint run.

    Practice makes perfect.

    Cheers, Erich.

Firstly are you using good quality thinner? General purpose thinners can do this (dry effect). If you are, try using 'R107 Acrylic Retarder Thinner' from protec. I had the same problem (dry finish) and 10-15% of this stuff made a huge difference. That and carefull adjustment of the gun.

P.S. Any more RRc/Disco 1 transmission coolers? Am thinking of ganging some together to make a full width efficient cooler for my project SIIB!
