    Intermittent Loss of Horn Function

    Signalment: 99 V8 D2
    History: loss of beep...
Symptoms: intermittent loss of horn function. Press either one time fine - next time not working. Where to start?? Known issues? Tempted to take steering wheel stuff off and have a look at contacts around buttons etc (but I'm no electrician...)
    Assessment: horn not working
Plan: a) have a look myself or b) auto electrician ($$$)

They're white actually. (It doesn't look good when a vet runs over a dog or kid from lack of horn......)

It could be the horn relay but likely to be the switches though.
Are the switches located properly? They tend to break a leg & come loose (there's 4? legs on each).

Very good - but the dogs around here 'don't read my finger'... ... and it might be seen as trumping up work during a quiet time if I hit one...

Given it away really, hasn't he?

Says they're 'white actually'. I've only been told they're small and blue but I am more than happy to 'stand corrected' with the knowledge of one with first hand experience.

GP's around here have been giving samples away to their mates for special matrimonial occasions. (Weddings, parties, anything) http://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

    cheers, DL

    start with the easy stuff

[1] locate the horn, disconnect the wiring and apply +'ve & -'ve
    - does the horn work? NO - replace it, YES go to step two.

[2] clean all connection, and make sure they're tight when you plug the horn back to loom.
    - does it work now? YES - good, NO go to step three

[3] disconnect the horn again and check with a multimeter or test light that the +'ve is actually supplying power (may need to have ignition on if it's one of those cars that only beeps when they're turned on).
    - does it have 12V? YES - got to step four, NO - go to step five

[4] most horns switch earth, check with a multimeter on Ohms setting whether there is continuity with the body and the -'ve terminal when the horn button is depressed. YES - go to step six

[5] follow wiring to the relay and similarly check all it's connections.

[6] plug the horn back in and earth it,
    - does it now work? NO - trace & check wiring back to switch, YES - properly earth the horn, may just need to be tightened on the mounting bolt.

    etc etc etc,
