For up teem years landrovers real Defender focus was on military markets and not much use for an airbag in a gun fight, the vehicles are purpose built and as a side offering to the likes of us, unfortunately I feel this will be their downfall as they start losing the grip on defence contracts like ours
When I participated in the 1984 first Perentie trial they had a Merc on that one aswell it did ok but it was the Defender which towed the broken jeep around everywhere..........why T.F are we getting G wagons?

I think this is a furphy too - The major Landrover/Defender market has always been civilian - with modifications for military uses. While military sales have always been welcomed, the coil sprung 90/110 were designed to try and get some of the market back from the Japs (not the military market, the civilian market). This had some success in the eighties, but since the introduction of the Discovery, Landrover has not really put any effort into the Defender development, for either military or civilian use. It has merely been the beneficiary of Disco developments - such as the Tdi and Td5 engines and also gearboxes, traction control etc, plus a few minor improvements. But nothing that required any real expenditure.

With the loss of most of the utility market to the Japs, even on its home ground, it has become largely a niche lifestyle market

So why aren't all the trucks required to have airbags. I'm sure CAT and Komatsu don't put air bags in there trucks and they're still allowed to operate on site. Same with graders, they can reach some nifty speeds. Its almost like a bueacracy.

Like I said, common sense doesn't rate a mention. The lastest reason I was given regarding airbags was that we have a haul road on the back boundry which is a 60 zone so airbags are needed at a cost off 100,000's of dollars to replace the whole fleet,a better idea was simply change the signs to 40 and lower the speed limit at a cost of a couple of hundred. But like I said in the first paragraph.
