    Thermostat Too Cold?

    I am going to put a 160 thermostat in my 1995 D1 V8.

I know the standard is supposed to be 180, but I don't like the idea that if there is a problem the temp goes up to 100+ almost immediately.

Is there going to be any detrimental effect on the engine of constantly running it slightly cooler than it was designed for?

    Thanks

    Andrew

    Gday,

While i dont know the effects long term, I have done similar with the freelander. The freelander has the thermistat on the input instead of the output from the engine. It suffers thermal shock over time and damages the engine. I have retained the original thermo in there, (88degC?) but drilled 4x 3mm holes around it. It takes longer to warm in winter, but seems to keep the engine much more stable. Since doing it, i have only seen improvements. It hasnt got hot, the thermo fans come on less often (running cooler), and no loss of coolant (same time as the 2nd head gasket refit).

    Cheers!

No real effects, bit worse for the emmissions side of things, but if your engine is going to overheat, it will overheat, better of fixing the reason its cooking, as a 20*Fahrenheit coolet Thermostat ain't going to do lick

The cold start compensation on the 14CUX does not cut out until 80C.
So if you put a 160 F = 71C thermostat the 14cux will enrich the mixture all of the time.
IE your choke will be on.
    Don't do it .
Coolest advisable is 82C but 88 is OEM and I have found this best.

the nominal temp for the engine will be around 90-95 degrees (yes Im generalising here) which is just over the normal temp for the thermostat.... (88) generally your not really overheating till your well over 100 in the 110-120 range.

if you start to work the engine hard it will heat up thats normal but once you ease off it should start to cool down. and come back to the 90-95 range.

you need to start worrying when it goes up their easily and doesnt come back down OR when it gets up there and then climbs over.

This of course assumes that you have an accurate temperature gauge in the first place.

OK - sounds like I will stick with the standard 180/88. I am not too worried about the 14CUX because it usually runs on LPG. I will drill a few holes in it for the extra flow though.

What temp would it need to get to before it causes damage like slipped liners, head gaskets etc?

I am also going to put some exhaust wrap around the extractors to try and drop the temp in the engine bay. Has anybody had any experience with that type of thing?

    Thanks

    Sigh...............

Its virtually impossible to cook an engine full of water, usually it overheats, spews then water, then fugs itself

To further that, holes will reduce its operating temp by increasing flow through the radiator, atleast in cooler weather. In the 1.8 it was to reduce thermal shock by keeping the water flowing, the v8 doesnt have this issue. I was just saying that it had no adverse effects over 20,000kms running cooler/with the holes.

    cheers!

Too true. It's definately NOT a 4x4 engine... When in a lotus it moves tho!
