    Broke a plasma rope yesterday

Twice actually. Trying to remove a stubborn tree stump.

The winch motor didn't load up that much, way before stalling the motor, so I guess the rope was well & truly on the way out.

The outer strands tore cleanly, but the inner core stretched before letting go.

These do have a bit of recoil when breaking. The car end of the rope somehow shot back through the fairlead, & the hook up ended with 30' of rope near it.

But no damage to anything on the way. Becuase these things have essentially no mass, I wouldn't be too concerned by being hit by it. It just didn't have that much kinetic energy.

This rope would be the best part of 10 years old. The fraying had become noticable so a couple of years ago I reversed it on the drum. Can't complain, its outlasted all the prior wire ropes put together.

As for the tree stump, well its still there, damnit.

    Regards

Thats stunning Max, especially also that it was 11mm plasma that was being used. It's immensely strong plasma... would you put it all down to fraying or do you think the pull from the winch was a factor in it too?

It's be interesting to know what the Extreme Winch challenge competitors run on their winches.

How did you end up tying it up? I recall watching an event up in QLD where they snapped the plasma which pretty much just fell on the ground - perhaps with the ends seperated by 6 or 8 meters and the navi just tied a simple knot in it and they kept going.
    Cheers

    Yep the stump's a winner..

I don't know why really. Normally the winch would stall. I did put a knot in it and try again - beer-o'clock was approaching - and it just broke again.

No evidence of grit in the fibres. I didn't think the fraying was that bad. I can only guess that they do deteriorate over time.

Have come close to breaking my tractor, a turbo 50 HP 4WD shibaura, trying to pull stumps. Left it a couple of years till it rotted then moved it. Once broke a front tail shaft link pulling a too large log the wrong way. Go stump grinder.

44 galon drum with the ends removed. Place over the stump, light a fire in the drum and let it burn till the stump is gone (day or two).

Max if you can wait a few weeks and are interested in a bulk buy a few of us putting in and getting a big roll of plasma.
