EGR removal.... more than I bargained for!

Well, amongst all of the other rubbish that I do in a day, I thought that I had better give the Disco some attention... something it hasn't had this year apart from a new set of boots.

Soooo, finally after all of this time I installed the EGR kit that Tombie arranged. Another thanks to you Mike!

The installation was very straight forward. I was interested to note that where the EGR returns into the exhaust manifold did not have a gasket... so I assumed one wasn't needed. After a startup and some detergent water over the exhaust blanking plate it was obvious that a gasket was needed.... so I used some of that high temp exhaust manifold gasket silicon glue whatever it is. Problem solved. The minor plumbing was also removed between the EGR controller and the EGR unit, and likewise the controller and the vacuum line where it breaks out from the vacuum pump. I used one line to go between the controllers inlet and outlet to keep grit clear and to maintain that part so that the ECU didn't log faults from its absence.

Well, the off idle when cold doughyness has gone. Lag off idle has been sooo reduced.

Here is the other interesting bit.....

My brakes have improved by heaps! AFAIK the EGR system must have been leaking air. Anyway, the Disco stops really well now. Very happy if it was only for that!
    Cheers

I thought the brakes ran off the vacuum pump?

    Thanks for the review.

They do. It seems though that the EGR controller and actuator also use the vacuum pump to operate the EGR system. I can only assume that they must have been leaking somewhere in the system.

I fitted mine yesterday. Easy but dirty job.

I immediately noticed the sluggish response off idle, as mentioned above, disappeared. The wife also noticed. She also mentioned that it was smoother and a slightly different note is heard from within the cabin.

I was absolutely stunned at the sludge that was in the manifold. Is it doing any harm, probably not, but I want it gone.....just have to find a stronge enough chemical to safely remove it.....Chemtech should make something.

A friend fitted a bypass kit to his patrol and said that the fuel consumption went right up so he fitted it back on. Hopefully, this isn't the case with the Landy..

Thanks Mike and all else involved is supplying this kit..

Tombie2 on here sells them. He has a post just above in this thread.

I cant recall the cost. $90 or something may be a little more and that was before the dollar moved.
