Park/Tail Lights Dead - Now Really Confused

    Hi All,

I have a 1985 110 Isuzu County. A couple of weeks ago I posted up a problem about my park & tail lights. All but the front driver's side park light died. I replaced all the bulbs but it made no difference. I also replaced the fuses and cleaned up the contacts. Again, no difference. I checked my tow bar wiring & no problem there.

I played around with a multimeter and test light a bit but got nowhere. I pulled the fuse box apart but found nothing really odd. Then I noticed the horn circuit was dead. I put a new fuse in it and the horn worked again. So did all the park & tail lights, the dashboard lights and the rear screen washer motor. The problem is they all worked all the time, even when switched off. Luckily the horn only works when you press the button on the stalk. If I pull the fuse out of the horn circuit, the dash lights will still work on the light switch.

I know the lights are not on the same circuit as the horn, although I think the interior light may share the fuse. Mine has never worked.

Any ideas, or should I just buy some battery powered LED lights they use on push bikes and stick them on instead

May be related - some years ago I found the fuse supplying the horn and interior light kept blowing. Unable to find a problem until it got so the fuse blew as soon as it was replaced. Eventually I found an extra wire not on the wiring diagram going from the fuse. As a trial I cut this and found that this solved the problem with no other side effects. I suspect it is a live feed to the rear of the vehicle which has shorted, possibly inside the chassis.

Usually the biggest problem with the wiring is shonky fixes and modifications.
Check that you head light switch is working (not melted) and that power hasn't been supplied from some other source, i.e the horn, to get them working.
With the interior light, switch on the dash switches two separate circuits. The interior light runs off the clock fuse and the dash lights run of the headlight/parkers power.
Do you have a wiring diagram? Be highly suspicus of wires and connections that don't look original. If you county is an isuzu done by LRA they were a bit shonky with their wiring. Thankfully that was pretty much limited to geting power for the stop solenoid.

    Thanks guys.

I have found some dodgy extra wiring but it looks like it was all disconnected. Some of it is spliced into the loom, so I am in the process of tracking it all down and removing it carefully. So far I've made absolutely no difference though. I get the feeling I'll be pulling out a lot of the original loom and fittings before I fix it. I also suspect that the problem will go away eventually without me ever really knowing why.

I agree, check the trailer plug. Also check your trailer if you have one, it may have a short which is effecting the truck everytime you connect up.

Well I've now completely removed the trailer plug, a rear spotlight, several accessory plugs, some speakers, some random extra wiring and so on. All of it was installed in a haphazard, hamfisted way.

Sadly, it has made no difference. Putting a fuse in the horn circuit now results in a strong burning smell and a very short life for the fuse. Needless to say the battery will be staying disconnected for the time being.

I should complain, but I've been meaning to learn more about this stuff for a while. I'm guessing that something is shorting the horn and light circuits to earth, but there's a few hundred feet of wire to look at yet!

Some time back I had a problem with tail lights blowing a fuse. Tracked it down to the wire rubbed through within the chassis. Was able to push a sheath far enough up in the chassis to fix the hassle. This may be different your problem but has worked for me so far.(This was on a def)

Looks like I may have a similar problem. From what I can tell I'll be pulling the loom apart to find the short, as I just cant seem to find it from the outside. I have found lots of damaged wire but have isolated or removed it, with no difference. The thing that troubles me is that the problem is jumping across a couple of separate circuits.

Back to the workshop - at least this morning I have a hangover to keep me company

Well today I drank 7 cups of coffee, ate very little and totally failed to find the problem. I did manage to pull most of the dash out and dismantled a few other things. I'm resisting taking the front body panels off but there are some wires in there I can't get to.

Once I find the problem, I'm in for a hell of a lot of work putting it all back together. On the plus side, the dashboard no longer holds any mystery for me.
