    Points for Rover V8

Hello everyone. Please excuse me if this is in the wrong section, but I am seeking some help.

I recently purchased a ski boat, which has an old Rover aluminium block V8 in it. I was told it would be around the 3.5ltr - 3.8ltr size, but am not 100% sure. It runs very well and has recently been tuned by the mechanic.

When he gave the engine a thorough tidy up, he gave the points a good clean up but said it would be a good idea if I found some as a replacement down the track.

Now if anyone on here could help me or point me in the right direction as to where I would be able to pick up a set of points for my engine, I would be greatly appreciative.

I have attached a few photos of the engine so that it may give you a better idea of what I have. If someone could clarify which engine it is and its capacity, that would also be great.

    Thank you in advance.

Certainly looks like an old rover motor

It will be 3.5 litres if it is a standard one. 3.9 came much later.

Where is your air cleaner? I don't know anything much about the older carby motors but plenty here who do.

Presumably a 3.5 unless something has been done with it. Mate I would do away with the points and convert to electronic ignition using a piranah kit. It is a simple job to do and will be far more reliable. The dizzy's in those old rover engines hate water so you will want to make sure you can seal it.

The motor obviously runs ok as is and has done in the past. If all you need is a set of points any Rover specialist should be able to help. If you cant find a brand on the distributor just take a photo with you or the old set of points. Even places like Repco etc should be able to get a set.

Yes, the motor does run well but I would still like to track down and purchse a new set of points. I noticed you're situated in Melbourne, do you know of any Rover specialists in Melbourne or country Victoria?

I would replace the whole dizzy, there are some buick/pontiac V8 HEI dizzies on ebay going for around $50, better than any electronic kit and about as waterproof as you can get and fit the rover motors. For a boat i would be getting rid of those twin carbs too and fit a single holley or rochester carb.
