I still found the shifting became notchy and the box rattly at those temps with MTL, so I ended up with a MTL/MT90 brew which was a bit better.
The real fix is an oil cooler on Tdi's. Still haven't installed mine.

Also, there seems to be a huge variation in shift quality between VEHICLES.
I have a huge number of vehicles with these gearboxes to work on and some are just better than others
There is only a handful out of all these that IMO have faultless shift quality. Most have some kind of little or even glaring faults, some owners putting up with it and some requiring a few different oil types/ viscosities until I find a satisfactory solution.

    Oils ain't oils!

Mmm.. so I'm not the only one having troubles. My 2003 TD5 has been slightly difficult to get into 2nd from 1st, and into 4th from 5th.

Just bought some Penrite "Manual gear oil 75" which lists my car on the pack. It's a "synthetic fortified SAE 75w-80" .. so we'll see whether it makes a difference or whether damage from wrong oil (previous owner) has already been done.

Have you loosened the Bias springs on the gear stick and tried the gear changes?
A little tweak there can sometimes help. it might just need a smidgen to get it right then tighten the nut up again

Any idea what was in there ?

My 'go to' oil in a R380 is Castrol Syntrans, it seems to work well in the majority of them, although sometimes you'll get one that can be a little particular, as JC said above.

It's highly unlikely that the wrong oil will do any damage unless the gearbox has an oil pump like the old Range Rover four speed in which case is supposed to have engine oil. If you put gear oil in them it is to thick and will break the pump drive shaft.

Many vehicles over the years have different spec oils mainly to aid smooth shifting.

Ford Falcon 1967 to 1975 3 speed use engine oil
Falcon 3.3 engine 5 speed Auto oil
Toyota Camry 5 speed Auto oil

We would have customers come in with four speed Holdens complaining about hard shifting when cold especially in winter.
We would change the oil from 90 gear oil to engine oil. Problem fixed with do detriment to the gearbox.

It is best to avoid auto trans unless it is specified as it will shorten the life of brass synchro rings.

    Dave.
