    How hot is too hot

Just reading Des Hammils book on how to tune Rover V8s and he states that the maximum operating temperature for a Rover V8 should be 80 Degrees C at all times.
How do people feel about this??
I personally suspect in the UK that could be all fine and dandy but in Australia I think he could be off the mark.
Noticed my car was running at 85 Degrees C today and its only 40 odd

The Thor and Storm dont start to open the thermostat until 82 degrees. The Thor engine fan comes on at 100 degrees and the Storm fan comes on at 110 degrees.

I suspect coolant, cooling efficiencies and engine management have improved since then.

80 degrees was for a carby engine. I think for EFI, and pollution controls, around the mid 90's was required.

Interesting to read how the HP drops away, as the engine temp climbs over 80.

maximum power at 75 degrees. Once you hit 100, you've lost 10% of your power.

    Thermostats

    My understanding is

    88 degrees for EFI
    78 for carby

If you do a search you will find a subject at length that PhillpA has done up regarding thermostats & the ECU
