I know I'm in the wrong fourm but thought some one will know the answer here. I have an old Suzuki 4HP outbord that I scored a while ago thats been gathering spiders in the shead since getting it, with the approch of the holiday season thought I would drag it out and fire it up. It runs really well but want to change the oil in the leg. Anyone know what spec oil to use in these things? I live out in the sticks so nearest boat shop is a 4 hr drive away.

Just checked the bottle in the shed and unfortunately this is not going to be much help. It’s called “HPF-XR Synthetic Gearcase Lubricant” and has absolutely no useful information on the label at all. Only good news is that several places can mail a kit out - comes with a small pump which makes it easy to fill from the bottom plug.

You are meant to use the outboard gear oil as it has a water repelant in it to protect the parts if water gets in
Oil doesn't go off ... So undo the bottom bung and if the oil is clean // not milky (as in water got in) .. dont change it // just top it up
I also have a V6 175 hp motor ... what do i do with that??

The oil that came out looked like used engine oil so was keen to replace it. Thanks for your help

The Castrol outboard gear oil bottle in front of me states it is a special SAE 90 extreme pressure gear lubricant. If using for competition use Syntrax 75W-90 or Castrol SAF-XA. I realise its a 4HP but most gear oils of EP standard should suit. If the outboard has sat for a while I would replace the gear oil. Mine did not run for about 6 months and was very dark when I replaced it. Smelt terrible as well.
