    rust 2001 defender/extreme

My 01 extreme has some rust in the "band" that sits between the tub and the rear wagon section (which sits on top of the tub and houses the sliding rear windows).Sorry, bad explanation....
The band has a sort of 1/4 moon shape to it and runs from the rear passenger doors to the back of the 110, stops at the back swingaway door.
    It's about 30mm high.
Anyway....does anyone know if this strip is steel or aluminium?
I know the 110 is a mix of both but I thought this strip would be alluminium, the rust though sures makes it look like steel.
Then, how do I get at it to repair the rust?
    From the inside out ??

Thanks in advance for any help.

It is steel. LR decided to stop galvanising them for a period. They are galvanised again now.

If you want to remove them, from memory, you need to remove the roof and sides, then drill out the rivets that hold them on

Anyone know how the roof is attached, is it just bolted, any permanent/welded spots?
