for a while I was looking at a Gen3 Conversion for my range rover , It will probably set you back $6-7K including the motor and the adaptors , now I'm sure for a Tdi rebuild you're looking at a lot less than this , then if you want a Vapour injection LPG set up for V8 you have to factor in the cost that as well...

I had thought of a GenIII but as you say they are pricey for a good one plus the bits. 5.0L Holden injected V8's are much cheaper however. Motors seem to hover around $1500 for a good one and get cheaper, there are some VT Calais Supercharged 6's available for about $2500, or there is the trusty 3.8L V6 buick from a VP,VR,VS etc which can be had for like $500. Then the conversion kits on Marks Adaptors are about $750, plus other items if needed to get the motor working due to the elctronics. As mentioned above there is alot of stuffing around as opposed to doing the diesel, and it depends on the damage to my engine. Hopefully as also mentioned above its a case of doing the head changing the oil and away you go.

One more question. Could coolant leak onto the carpets inside the car, i lifted the floor mats and the carpet on both the passenger side is wet, not dripping wet though. But it doesnt smell like coolant and i would figure if there was enough to soak the carpets you would be able to smell it if it was from the engine. But thinking back i have been smelling a bit of a coolant smell under accelleration over the last couple of days, but after a few secs the smell went away so i thought nothing of it, i am begining to think that was a big mistake.

    Happy Christmas!!

Coolant can/will leak from u/s heater core into the carpet above (and eventually, below!) passenger's feet...

But I'd doubt the trickle that usually occurs would be enough for you to have such a catastrophic failure as this one.

Has the coolant reservoir let go? ALL the hoses checked? Likely, when you lift the cylinder head, the head gasket will have blown and if #3 and/or #4 pistons have not picked up in the bore, you'll get away with a head gasket and head reco. Have the head done by a reputable crowd and have them Brinell test for hardness. Overheated Tdi heads can go soft and you can't keep head bolt tensions.

Best case - head gasket, head bolts and perhaps head skim. (about $500)

Worst case - call Phil at TRS for a second hand long donk. (about $3.5K)

Just rebuild the tdi, unless you really want the conversion, not really dear to rebuild, its usually ancillaries that cost lots of money, as the pump like you stated,

In your conversion, dont forget to factory in all of the other stuff that needs to be done like rewire, replumbing exhaust, A/C, Power steer, heat hosing, radiator and fan shroud fitting to suit and coolant hoses from new outlets, airbox and inlet tract, add charcoal box, any sump conversions etc.
    Cheers

No coolant what so ever was dropped on the ground. I didnt see any steam or anything whilst driving, when we stopped there were little wifts of steam coming from under the bonnet but not the plumes of steam you might get with a hose failure. When i stopped the system was under pressure and nothing was leaking. The little hole on top of the expansion tank did have coolant in it though and there was a little bit down the sides but it was bubbling out from under the cap at the time.

I need to find out the cause of the the overheat cause dont want to rebuild it then have it happen again. I suppose its a case of get it all done then take it to a cooling system specialist and have them pressure test etc.

I thought the heater core might have been a possible cause but wouldnt you smell the coolant pretty strongly inside the cabin. I would only get little sniffs of it inside the car every now and then, and mainly under acceleration up a decent hill. Matt

at the moment thats what is stopping me. But i cant ring Marks Adaptors to ask them what is needed, and how easy it is to hook up heating and cooling systems, radiator fans etc (i would most likely go with thermo fans anyway). But they dont open until the 12th of january so i cant ask them

I'm pretty sure Marks only supply the engine mounts, gearbox adaptor and ECU equipment. For the rest you're on your own. A lfew people have done these conversions that are on here though, so they'll have the tech.

Your better off on your own, makes for a better job than alot of bits they supply
