To rebuild or replace with a V8?

Well to cut a long story short the engine in the disco decided to melt down this morning 200m from the 80 zone coming into bathurst. Temp spiked suddenly lost power and then the motor siezed, well not quite siezed but it didnt want to turn over. It turns now its cold but very slowly. Not sure whats gone in internally but it doesnt seem all that good. The expansion tank was still full when i stopped but as it cooled it all disapeared and it didnt loose coolant onto the road anywhere, so stuffs me where its gone, i havent really assessed it all yet. No smoke or anything from the exhaust and no warning noises or anything. Its got me stumped.

So now the questions arrises, what next? Given it took the temp gauge off the charts and it was that bloody hot it wasnt funny you could safely assume the head is buggered. If i am going to start stripping stuff off and its been cooked badly what else it likely to need replacing? The oil has a nice toasted aroma so she is well and truly BBQ'd.

I am thinking i might look into a 5.0L ford or holden V8 conversion and then convert it to gas, cost wise it would be cheaper than rebuilding the diesel if its that bad. But is there a straight up conversion kit available to make life easier or will it be a headache?

What does everyone think? I know it will depend on the damage inside the motor but some opinions would be good.

Well, i have had a better look, havent pulled anything off yet but the motor is now turning freely but with a severe loss of compression, well from what i can tell. As the engine turns over you can hear a popping noise every few cranks, still no fluid leaking externally and the oil level on the dipstick has dropped about 5mm.

As i said above nothing was expelled from the exhaust at all, now plume of smoke or steam or anything. There is a bit of a soot build up at the top of the exhaust but nothing major, it has been pumping a little bit more smoke out the back since the Bruce Davis tweeked injector pump went in.

Still no idea what the go it.

I was looking at this page on Marks Adaptors and if i read correctly is are these kits only suitable for disco's and rangies fitted with V8 petrol engines and not Tdi's?

Has anyone done this conversion into diesel disco manual and not used stuff from marks adaptors? They arent open again until the 12th of january and i was hoping to get started sooner than that. If i need to wait i need to wait but some feedback from someone who has done it would be helpful if i do end up going down that path.

    If the diesel is shot

Cheap motor replacement would be the go

In order of cheapest in my opinion

    1: Another replacement Diesel
2: V8 out of a Disco ... You have to buy a whole car as you will be after many parts to suit
3: Aftermarket V8 install .... Still need a bucket of parts and will prove to be the most costly & time consuming exercise

    OR

Wreck what you have and buy a V8 Disco ... cheapest & most less painfull method

I agree with a Rover V8. That'd be the fastest way to get out of trouble if you want a V8 conversion. It would be significantly easier, faster and probably cheaper. I bought all of my parts from Andrew e to do a conversion and it has been very straight forward so far as all of the bits were included.

a rover v8 isnt an option, if i am going to put a v8 in i would put a more economical powerful 5.0L but i had the same thoughts as you on the time consuming and bucket of parts side of things aswell.

I need to have a look inside the diesel and see whats happened. I still dont know what caused it all. The cooling system has only recently been flushed, new water pump and new expansion chamber cap. I am thinking the head gasket might be the offending article but im not sure.

    Is it a Tdi or Td5 ?
I cooked my Tdi 3years ago due to a failed head gasket. It seized at the time but turned over once cold. I just replaced the gasket, had the head plained and she's been great ever since. Cost less than $500.

Yeah its a Tdi, i am going to pull the head off and survey the damage, if thats the case i will be doing that. I am just looking at other options should the damage be worse. I am hoping thats all i need to do. I just spend $2500 on a new injector pump so i would like to keep the diesel if possible. Just looking at other options.
