    Angry Cooked 300 disco

My neighbor has blowen a hose and run with no coolant to near stand still. Still turns over but down on compression. With 380K on clock have decided to get a S/H engine out of a Fender with less Ks.
Engine was around 1K so can spend a bit on it before goes in.

May be a Head gasket, Valve seals, Timming belt etc.

Any sugestions on what else should be done wile its out?

I've seen a few threads here on timimg kits that have failed What sould we advoid?.

This one has a ZF auto so may be replace torqe converter seal as well.

    Thanks Tony.

Hi mate, i just lost my engine in a similar fashion but mine blew a head gasket and dumped the coolant.

If i had the motor out and didnt know how many km's or its sevice history i would throw a new set of rings and bearings in it aswell, do the head gasket and any other gasket, a complete gasket kit isnt to expensie. A timing belt kit with new pulleys etc etc is around the $350 mark and i wouldnt bother putting it in unless this was done. You might aswell take the time now, with new bearings and rings etc it will do another 400000km or so if done right. Matt

You will probably find some main bearing shells have worn to the copper (or are very close). If you pull the rear main cap, replacing the T seals requires making guide plates to lead the seal in properly (other wise they will give trouble).

Caps on valve stems, F&R crank seals, timing cover seal, P gasket, bearings in idler pulleys for ancillaries belts.

Give starter, lift pump and vacuum pump a good check.

Change over alternator (disco alternator is higher output than defender).

Do you know the history of the defender engine, particularly has it ever had a serious overheating, or head gasket problems.

Overheated heads can develop soft spots and won't hold the bolt clamping force. They need to have the hardness tested and should be re-heat treated if soft areas are found.

Pulled the heads off both engines.
The 1st one had been so hot had broken rings and a piece out of no piston
The head has small cracks next to glow plugs and is warped. Not going to get it looked at at this stage.

The bores look a bit glazed in S/H engine but looks to have had head work and new T belt but we are going to do it all again incl send head away for test and also test injectors.

I'm not keen to touch the bores including the carbon lip around the top. In my past experience they best left there unless new rings and hone is done.

in addition to the items already listed, beffore rebuild look at the condition of the injectors and on rebuild obviously fit a new water pump and replace the vacuum pump if it is leaking

    Some more pics.

I don't like the look of the bores at all.

This 300 came out of a fender so engine loom and a few other bits have to be swapped.

Ever tried to get the loom out of a Disco

The Disco is Auto and Fender was.... well you know. Should we use the disco flywheel with flex plate.
Going to drop sump and check bearings + change rear main oil seal.

265k runs a treat, little blowby, removing it from a 97 Disco, still driving, that fan to flex with all ancillaries, only thing wrong, is the stupid vac pump leaks, 3k, might include frieght if the bar and winch sells for enough
