Try tightening up the nuts on the end of the suspension arms.

I had a persistent small piece of metal ringing noise, turned out to be the washer on the end of the hockey stick.

Didn't look loose. I think I had to open the door and stick my head under while I was driving along to find it.

It slid backwards and forwards on start and stop, and clicked.

    Try this in your driveway

Wind down the window ... and stick your head out to see the wheels

Go forward and touch the brakes // Click?
Now go backwards and touch the brakes // Click?

You don't need to drive fast ... just move & touch the brake to get the sound

This will be your brake pads ... Nothing wrong // all is fine

    Gday Adrian

I take it you got correct bearings and seals from your other post.As already been said could be bearings,cv's, uni's ect.

Mate what I would suggest is chock the rear wheels, put it in neutral gearbox/transfer.Jack up the front both tyres put stands under each side of the axle and give the wheels a spin while under the defender. To pin point where the sound is coming from.

Same thing happened to me last weekend thought I would give the old defender a service all filters/oil, anyway took it for a drive around the block and I could hear a tapping sound coming from the rear.

Drove home jacked up the rear spun the tyres and at first thought I had not put enough oil in the diff for the bearings.Turned out that I wound the diff filler plug in a few too many times and it was rubbing on the Crown wheel, carrier or center. Not sure which one but the sound went away straight away after I wound it out a few turns.

I had a similar noise in the front end of the wifes disco, one of the contributers to the noise was the panhard rod bush's were flogged out and the bolt was really badly worn causing the rod to be able to twist upon take off and stopping.
It now only has one noise left and it clicks when turning under load (body roll) I think it could be in the swaybar area somewhere.

    Good luck with it.

    Cheers
