Hey all, happy new year ( if this that time for you already!)!!!

Im just wondering if anyone could step me through how to change the fuel filter on my disco series 1 300 tdi auto. Also does it have 2? On near the tank and one in the engine bay? I cant seem to see how to beed the system... Thats assumung its like an oil change. but the steps would be grand!

Disassemble the sedimenter at the rear by removing the bolt on top. Don't open the drain tap as it'll probably snap off. Probably best to do it whilst there is less than 1/4 tank of fuel. Wash all the parts in kerosene and reassemble.

To do the filter on the bulkhead, just unscrew it and wind a new one on. It can go on dry, start the engine and let it idle for a bit. If you want you can fill it up with diesel first before screwing it on, or as I do, fill it with Liqui Moly "Diesel Purge".

The thing at the back should be the sedimenter, separates out water and gunk from the fuel, the bowl inside needs a clean. There is a drain plug on the bottom, breaks easily. Best to undo bolt on top and drop the bowl off to clean. Make sure it seals properly when you put the bowl back on.

Filter at the front, unscrew the old one, make sure the seal comes off with it. Bit of diesel on the seal of the new one. Screw it on.

Small bolt on the top of the filter housing, undo it a bit - it has a groove cut in it.

Lift pump is down the side of the engine behind the fuel injection pump. Pump it up until fuel comes out of the top of the bolt on the fuel filter housing.

Nip it up drive away. If the lift pump doesn't pump turn it may not be engaged with the cam, turn the engine over to turn the cam. Pump. If the lift pump still doesn't lift, it's stuffed.

I've always been warned against this practice as it's too easy to introduce contaminants onto the 'wrong' side of the filter media and hence through the pump. The injector pump runs at much finer clearances/tolerances than an engine, and the filter should filter better than beta2=5.
A Bosch VE pump also relies on the fuel as it's lubricant, so I'm not too keen on the 'let the engine idle to prime' thing to save against potential lift pump failure either. IMO lift pumps are cheaper than injector pumps.

FWIW I always pre-fill the engine oil filter.
