    P38a+350(LS1) Chev+4HP24

Has anyone done a chev/LS1 conversion to a P38a on here or know of someone who has?

What computer systems would need sorting out?

Could you keep the air susp?

Could you keep all the climate control and other ancillary bits and bobs on them without too much stuffing around?

Im not wanting it for myself but Ive been toying about with this scenario with a mate for a while now, I know that fitting it shouldnt be toio much a problem and could sort a large amount of the electronics out by using a separate trans computer and doing a coil conversion but he would like to keep it as close to what he has now but with more power and reliability.

He would want to be able to run either duel fuel or straight petrol so would be most likely be fuel injected so would it be possible to run the rover ECU for the GM engine with a reprogramed chip? or are there other sensors etc that wont cross over?

Im not up to speed much with either fuel injection system and only really have a broad understanding on how petrol inj systems work so im relying on the brains trust here.

I'd like to do one, If I can get another cheap enough P38, I think I'll lift the gen3 from the jag and have a dip

When I was tempted I was going to use the existing ECU, sensors etc and fit them to the motor, fair bit of getting right, but its only machineing

    check out:
    RangeRovers.net • View topic - LS1 conversion Thread - Ideas, Thoughts, etc

there was a small firm in the UK which succeeded and conveniently used the GEMS sensors on the LS1 which was then converted to run on LPG. Their website is/was LS1-power.com I understand they are no longer in this business

The venture cost them a heap of money apparently and they were stuck with a supply of cast bellhousings which needed further machining.

I did manage to take a copy of part of the website -of interest are the following:

    Standard conversion

    5.7 LS spec engine.
Custom bellhousing and torque convertor mountings
    Bespoke engine mounts
Exhaust interface to standard RR exhaust.
    Upgrade fuel delivery system
Relocation of standard ancillaries (Aircon, PAS)
Supply of new alternator and wiring
    Modification of looms
Custom programming of GEMS engine management.
Airbox modifications and silicon intake hose
    Electric fan and adjustable controller

Sorry I have no other info...
    cheers

I know a bloke in cranbourne that could help sort out the electronics side of it, ie ecu/powertrain.

Just got back. Happy New Year to all.

Rovercare, I saw your response in my other thread. Agree that the best way would be to use the GEMS ECU and modify sensors etc to fit the GENIII, but how could it be made legit fro a pollution standpoint without spending a fortune on testing. One of the engineers I spoke to was happy as long as I used DELCO ECU cats/airbox etc...

I was also told to upgrade the brakes I don't see how as the current disc/calipers only just fit inside the 17inch alloys.

Body Computer communicates with the Engine to deactivate immobilisation, otherwise no go. You can now by Kits that bypass this.

Engine communicates with the Gearbox by hardwired lines pre 1999. It feeds in a Torque signal and receives a torque reduction request.

Basically, IMHO the best outcome would be to interface the Delco ECU with the Body/Trans ECU using the GEMS box as a translation device. This would cost $$$

The cheapest/easiest would be to Modify GEMS to suit the GEN III, and if you can get this past an engineer even better.

I currently have a P38 with no engine, but I also have no money.

You would also need to make custom engine mounts, but otherwise OK

No offence to McRover, but judging by his first post, I doubt it.

I haven't read your original thread, so I may be behind the eight ball, but I'm fairly sure you'll find the original ecu (GMH) can be reporgrammed to delete stuff like the body computer/imobilizer request, as well as certain sensors and the like.
I see you live in ringwood, if you are still interested in doing your project, drop me a PM, I can put you in contact with the bloke I mentioned before, (he lives in Mt evelyn, works in cranny). He's been involved in fitting ls1's to various projects.

The Delphi PCM for the Holden gear is the easy part, its only a matter of running down a set of menus and turning off the VATS

Its the Rover stuff that needs to be worked out
