    Central Locking Fitted!!

    Hi Guys,

Just finished a frustrating session of fitting central locking to my Defender. I don't think LR ever intended these to have central locking but anyway, it's all in and working now.

Thought you might like to see some pics...

    Nice job Nathan.

I can appreciate the frustrating moments. I have fitted quite a few door locks actuators to various vehicles, and always remember the time spent sitting there trying to visualise the geometry of it all, then putting that together with the actual mounting points available.

Not all Td5s. I think CL only became standard in 2003. I had to fit it to my 2000 TD5 Extreme.

    Nathan,
    Good job.
Did you do a search on here before posting? I had previously posted some info and pics when I did mine. I found it a relatively easy job. Just takes a bit of thought on where to position the solenoids and what type and shape to get.
    I fitted mine vertical.
Would have been fiddly to get them horizontal in the doors like yours.

    Hi Craig,

I did a bit of a search but I couldn't get the solenoids to fit in the vertical position, they kept fowling on the door trim.

You're right though, it was a bit fiddly!

    Nice....
am about to embark on this trip myself so will try to figure out how you have done your linkages.... vertical seems easier but like the idea of having them a bit higher.

Are you anywhere near Scotch College......noticed you have Hawthorn as your location.

Central locking- first thing I installed in the 130!

I got sick of opening the doors with the key in about 30 minutes, so installed an alarm and remote central locking.

I installed the actuator in the front door really well and very neat. just one problem the window only went part way down!
I ended up putting the actuator horizontally on the outside of the glass, basically using the door strengthening rib.
In the rear i put the actuator in vertically below the lock.

Very happy with the mounting and ran the wires in flexible braded sheath from door to body and then up through the roof to behind the dash to the control box. works a treat from remotes or using keys.

have had 3 faults since install almost 3 years ago. First was the screws loosened on the rear actuators and the actuator body moved rather than the lock. I ended up tightening the screws and adding a cable tie to prevent the actuator moving away from the lock.

next was the front actuator mounted like yours and the screws loosened in the clamp that attaches the actuator rod and the lock. Ended up the casting had cracked so had to buy another actuator to get another clamp added a nyloc nut and bolt and a cable tie or two and all better.

lastly just a couple of weeks ago one of the cables got caught in the mechanism and severed by the levers.

My friend installed it in a RRC and his wires keep fatigueing and has had to rewire most doors more than once.

Best thing I ever did to the car and i have done heaps. Dieselgas, transfer case ratio swap etc

    Cheers james

    Hi Chris,

    I'm up near Camberwell Junction...

All the best with your central locking - set aside a full day for it!
