    Cross Bolted 4.0 & 4.6's

    1. When did LR start cross bolting 4.0 and 4.6 litre blocks?

For instance did it coincide with their introduction ie GEMS changeover for P38's in 95 for 4.0 and 4.6's and later in 99 for the D2 4.0's? If not something easy like this to spot the change to X bolting, does anyone know the year / VIN's for the X bolt change?

    2. Is the stroke/pistons/sump the only difference between the cross bolted 4.0 and 4.6's (same bore) or are there crank, head etc variations between the two engine sizes? I am assuming P38 and D2 4.0 L were identical?

    Thanks

1997, if I recall correctly. As for the rest of the details, I don't know - sorry.

At least 1994 with the intro of the P38A. They had made cross-bolted blocks before that.

Re engine nos. I'll need to check my Des Hammill book

Look at the side of the engine - you'll see the cross-bolting.

Well, the block grading was different. Certain blocks were selected for the 4.6 owing the inter-cylinder web thickness to allow for the bigger bores. I'd need to check the part nos. for the rest.
