    QUICK D1 steering q.

'97 D1 needs constant correcting at 100 kmh to maintain a straight line. It seems to follow all the bumps/ruts in the road. It isn't noticeable at low speed.

My mechanic has inspected it all, changed panhard rod bushes and preloads, but tells me the issue is likely to do with the fact that my steering damper and its associated bushes are in the most appalling condition he has ever seen in his life. He said put a new Bilstein steering damper on.

Is it likely this is the problem? Boge or Bilstein, for the sake of sixty bucks between them?

RAVE says put vehicle on hoist to change it, can it be done on the ground?

Yes it could be the problem if it is really stuffed. Watch for wear where the damper bolts to the left side of the vehicle. They eye can elongate if the damper is really shot.

It's easy to do from the front of the vehicle without a hoist.

Bilstein is very good, but even a cheapy is better than a stuffed one. OME is a good middle of the road unit too. Also price a LR one it may not be that expensive.

Could just be play in the steering box. If you get play in the box it will feel like driving a Series truck as you have to move the wheel all the time just to keep the car in a straight line
Easy to just tighten up the box.

Last time i priced one from 4wd in blackburn they were $65, only a 15-20 min job lying on the ground - a square of carpet comes in handy for this

    yep that can do it.

its a 20 minute job if you know what your doing and have the ability to lift on the chassis to make inserting the second end easier.

I would also be checking the hockey stick bushes and if youve been lifted or not.
