    Question Rim Size

I'm shopping for a new set of tyres and all the tyre stores think I should have R16 on my 93 Discovery but I have 235/75 R15 on. Are they the wrong size?
Can I go up to R16 without changing the mag wheels? If so any benefit?
And any brand I should stay away from? I use it only on road and occasionally pull a fully loaded horse float (between 2-3 Tonne).
I have UniRoyal and Mega on there now but they don't make them anymore.
Been quoted so far: Maxxis $175ea Bridgestone $169ea Pirelli $246ea

the 15R is the rim size . so you have 15 inch wheels . The 16's will not fit on the 15's .

Disco's come out with 16 inch wheels standard . some one has fitted the 15 inch wheels to your disco at some stage . I have 15's on my disco . 15's are a cheaper tyre to buy and have a lot better range .

    Thumbs up

I see well that make sense; I often wondered that as nothing I have ever owned has had the standard wheel on it. One of the tyre guys said I could use R16 but I that didn't sound right as when I changed the float tyres I had to buy a complete set of wheels too they went from R13 to R15LT. The R13 where dragging the metal wheel guards on the road! Now it tows nice and level with the discovery so I wouldn't want to alter the height unless it was absolutely necessary.
Glad I asked first this time.

Somehow I think I would be avoiding that tyre shop in future.

Mind you, they'd be easy to fit to a 15" rim but might not hold too much air.

    you've got 15's on there...

when you go and get tyre quotes tell the shop you want something 235/75 R15 ish and name the dollars you want to pay for a set of 5 (or 6 if you have 2 spares, remember Ive seen your tyres)

par for the course would be the BFG AT but if you tell the tyre shop exactly what you do with it (mainly on road with towing a 3t horse float) they should recommend something with a less aggressive tread pattern but with a slightly stiffer side wall construction.

Get a written quote from a couple of places and then take it to a 3rd and see what they can do. Once youve got all that done scan the 3 quotes post them up here to make sure that you havent been duped by all 3 places (I have seen it happen) then go with what works for you.

I have just replaced a set of pirelli scorpions on my defender and they were a very good all round tyre.Your disco did originally have 16's but if it now has 15's thats fine.Go for something around a 245/75 if they make them. Pat

I just called him back and told him you can't put R16 tyres on 15 wheels he said no he was going to sell me a set with a new set of wheels too. I told him but I didn't ask for that and he said yeah but it is only $200 more? I must have sucker stamped to my forehead. I'm not buying new wheels I don't need.
