even under light throttle() mine see's 2grand before shifting
EDIT!- try around 1600 rpm and will keep upshifting till 4th comes in around 50kph,,
its a bit hard to tell though,,,
(shows how often i drive with a LIGHT throttle)
Is it normal for a V8 automatic Discovery to shift out of 1st very quickly? As in under a very light throttle, about one or two car lengths after moving off?

would this be the same on rangie 1990 model
and wouldnt harder shifts harm the box
just asking as mine rolls into second almost the minute i take off even under moderate accelleration (can hold first if foot to the floor)and then when i hold it in say second, and the revs get up a bit i can ease off ever so slightly and it willl shift third then foourth almost a second after![]()
There is a little more to adjusting the kickdown cable than that, the kickdown cable also controls line pressure for the transmission, tightening the cable with not only have later and harder shifts but increases line pressure - which isnt a bad thing, and by harder - i cant notice it in mine and i'm a mechanic and i notice little things in cars fairly easily. More line pressure actually decreases wear in an auto's to an extent, when the cable is slack the clutch plates 'slip' before coming together (providing a smooth shift) which wears away the friction material, if there is more line pressure, there is less slip meaning the friction plates shoudl last longer at the expense of a more positive harder shift. I have mine adjusted fairly tight, as advised by the auto specialist after i had it rebuilt as they've seen how i drove which is pretty hard.
Having said this, too much line pressure will cause passage and valves in the valvebody internals of the transmission to fracture - so if your not sure how much is too much, best to ask an expert
This really shouldnt happen as there are a couple of reliefs built into the valve body to relieve excess pressure.
I say shouldnt happen but when a relief valve isnt operated for some time and you have a lot of contaminants in the system they can get lodged in the valve or galleries which then wont function as intended.
The main negative to having too much tension on the kickdown cable is breaking the ball off the end of the cable in the box.
It is a PITA to change, near impossible without a hoist.
