It is all back together and running again.

The really loud nasty grinding noise is gone .

There is slight big end knock evident , but hopefully it will diminish, or not get worse.

Looking at the pics, it was about time Jon!

    Fortunately, big ends are cheap.

I hope all is OK for the trip back home.

I remember seeing some of those coloured bearings when we did my 3.9, and it only my head gasket letting go that we started the rebuild, apart from the water usage it was going fine

    Goes much better now though

Driven gently, probably a while. The noise was onlyh present on startup and over 2500 rpm.

I just didn't want to risk it for the drive home.

100 kph sees about 2100 - 2200 indicated on the tacho. I make no claims as to the accuracy of the tacho, my alternator is not standard.

    Did nearly 200 km today.

    Knock got progressively worse .

Did another oil change when we got back, little pieces of bearing material (I assume) came out with the oil.

Penrite HPR 50 now in the sump (40/70 grade).

Noise a lot better at idle, tomorrows driving will be interesting.

If its any more than really fine shavings ( normal for run in) i would worry about driving it, you'll get bit all over the engine and stuff up the oild pump, lifters score bores and what ever the rest gets into.

did you put cromolly grease on the bearings when fitting them?
