pre load? don't you just do it up?![]()
I am about to drop the gear box (LT95) out of my truck to investigate a noisy 3rd gear.
Does anybody know of a source of information on setting preload on the tapered roller bearing transfer case as used in perenties? Also, is the rest of the transfer case the same as the civvy version.
Cheers.

vern, hes talking about the taper roller bearing conversion carried out on the lt95 gearboxes integral transfer cases intermediate (or idler) shaft.
in theory it provides a stronger location of the helical cut gears as it resists the thrusting caused by the angular cut of the gears when placed under load.
IMHO this is not a modification you do "just because" its one that you do when you have to pull the box out for an alternative reason and since almost any work on the box requires some dismemberment of the tcase side (linkages and the rear support bearing) you might as well go the whole 9 yards.
putting it together with just the normal needle rollers and shimming plates I rate at about 2/5 installing a taper conversion kit and getting it perfect about 3/5 and if you want to convert your existing gearset 5/5 as it requires some seriously accurate machining and you only get one shot at it.
and I have a copy of the relevent EMEI but i believe that its already been put to electronic version in here...

Thanks Dave, yep it is the intermediate shaft I am talking about.
The T/case is already fitted with the tapered-roller shaft, but like you say, while Ive got the case partly disassembled it would be a good time to look at it.
The gearbox and t/case have around 240,000km on them.
Any idea of the link to the relevent EMEI
no idea of the link, sorry, I have my own copy of the EMEI so dont worry about looking for it.
if a search doesnt reveal it I'll scan the relevent pages for you (bout 8 from memory)
