    What should he look for

Mate of mine (don't snigger I do have one or two) has bought his wife a 1995 Disco TD1

I know bugger all about Deisels - so I thought I would ask the question.

It's got just over 200k on the clock...........what does he need to be aware of, what should be be paying particular attention to.

Apparently it's a well cared for motor, and owned / operated by a LR/Jag enthusiast !!! (so in other terms a complete nutter)

Any comments / tips etc., would be appreciated

    Ladas

First thing is find out when was changed the timing belt.
Second is installing a engine protection heat alarm
Third I would fit a filter between the water trap and the mount so the fuel system is well protected.
The rest is just pure preventative maintenance

Yep low coolant alarm is a must.

Check also the expansion tank is white rather than the original black (susceptible to leaking) one.

Here I go, trying to explain in my Spanglish the setup
On the RHS of the fuel tank is a sediment or water trap. The idea is to fit a filter between the sediment bowl and the mounting. To do that the only thing that is required is purchasing a longer bolt to hold the bowl under the filter.
Sorry ladas if I cannot explain properly, just ask JustinC and he will explain to you how is done in ozitralian languaje

Oh a mate is it Ladas? lol

    They all say that

To start with, just like your name isnt Lada's, it not a TD1, it's a Tdi, a 300 Tdi to be exact but thats just semantics really.

Secondly, everything that has been mentioned + belts, keep the serpantine belts in good nick as they tend to take out other stuff if they break and intake hoses, the 90 deg intake hose has a habbit of de laminating which causes a lack of boost.

Pull the radiator/intercooler out and give the whole thing a good flush and wash out including the intercooler.

I do this every 12 months or so and keeps overheating at bay as well as the intercooler is much more efficient and new coolant cant be a bad thing.

It's pretty straight forward after that

If it is a munual need to check the output shaft and input gear into the transfer case to ensure that the splines aren't wearing out due to lack of lubricant. The crossdrilled gear as well as bigger/longer splines is waht you want.
