A Baby Seat in a Series Ute???

Yes . . . don't ask . . . I know it's mad . . . but things have worked out so that the SIIA ute will be our best car at the same time that our first bub arrives in late July.

No, getting another car is simply not a choice - I quit two jobs in the last half of last year in this funny little town and getting into debt isn't an option right now.

I've almost gone blind doing searches on this site but can't seem to find anything about fitting a seat in the middle of a Series Landie with a cab roof. Defender, yes, 130, certainly, but not a Series ute. (Or a Defender one, come to think of it.)

There's a that rail behind the seats that static belts bolt to, and these points are also where the cab roof bolts on. I don't think strength in that area will be a problem. But how to legally do it?

Funnily enough, the WA Type 2 fitting station up here is Toyota in Broome, (according to a PDF leaflet someone posted here - thanks to whoever did that!). I'm really looking forward to hassling them with this old car and seeing what they do! There must be some way to fit a baby seat into a LandCruiser ute so hopefully they'll have some idea.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

It can be done, but the problem will be getting the fitting station to find a way of doing it that meets their guidelines. The major problem will be the space behind the seat, not the strength of the tub.

Also, be very careful about the size seat/capsule you get, or you may be forced to foreswear the use of second and fourth gears (or apply a nonstandard bend to the lever). More practically, it may be easier, if less convenient to fit it to the LH seat position.

    its easy.... Ive done it...

all you need is an anchor point behind the seat at the top just below the level of the seat back.

I havent found the need to rebend the gear shift and alex has gotten adept at shifting his feet to make room for the shift. My arm rests nicely on his arm rest and his arm sits neatly on top of mine.

It used to be as I reached for the shift I would tuck my fingers over his foot, gently guide his leg out of the way, hold it with the side of my hand and then finger flick the shift.

It then evolved to he would automatically move his feet as the engine revs got to the point where I needed to upshift and then to where it is now, he also gets it on the downshifts when the engines labouring and most times when I go for engine braking.

the mounting plate should pass muster if its a 50x50 mm plate with a 10mm hole with all edges radiused and deburred.

I've got it rigged up in my series 3, but it's not a ute cab, and not strictly legal.

I have a footman loop (like a big staple) attached to the top of the bulkhead behind each seat, which the seat clips to nicely. it's rarely used for that though.
