I've had two Disco's. combined 48,500 km travelled. Both wandered and shook steering over potholes at 100 km/h. (Like HOLY CRAP I'm going to lose it shake!!)
first up I replaced all the tyres
replaced the stock steel wheels with another set
replaced the steel wheels with genuine alloy wheels
replaced the panhard rod bushes
replaced the radius arm bushes
changed all four shock absorbers
changed the steering damper
changed the new steering damper to a Bilstein one
had the tyres rebalanced quite a few times
had the swivel preloads adjusted
replaced the brake discs and pads
tightened pas box 1/8th
Is it a normal characteristic?

Mums- stock 92 200tdi d1.
On corregated roads I can let go of the wheel at 100kmh and it steers straight.
It does occasionally track in grooves in the road, a bit more than the carolla but thats to be expected.
Wheel bearings would be my first port of call, there shouldnt be any noticable play if you jack up the wheel and rock it holding it top and bottom.
What springs are you running, are they lifted?
If the spring rates are wrong from 1 side to the other then they will steer and drive a bit wrong.
You also need good quality shocks and as far as shaking front wheels, my new damper took care of that on mine.

Yeah, mine was quite unstable at speed but it was lifted so you'd expect it.
However, what I did not expect was when I was test driving discoveries before I purchased one they all seemed to wander and did not feel positive over about 95kmph. I was really tempted not to get one after test driving three discoveries and all being worse then prados and 70 series.
On the m4 you felt like you were on corrugations. Okay, slight exageration but it was not nice.
mine used to like semi trailer runnels!
but on a good road--

Not normal. Is yours lifted at all?
We've done thousands of Kms on stony/sandy/potholed/rough roads in our 97 D1 and it is pretty relaxed at 100Km/h.
Looks likve you've done everything imaginable to fix it though
Bent chassis/Accident damage? Hardly likely on two vehicles though.....

Both my LR's drive straight at any speed without holding the wheel. It is totally and I mean TOTALLY a waste off time adjusting swivel pre-load.The bearings fret in the straight ahead position and then they are U/S,re-tensioning them puts more pressure on them so they wear quicker making it worse. You have replaced a couple of grands worth of good parts instead of 4 bearings and a couple of seals.
