SubscriberAt idle I have a slight rattle that can be heard over the engine when beside the defender.If I depress the clutch it disappears. It can also be heard at low speed particularly in low range as a sort of "patter"The noise sounds "rotational"and I thought I had two seperate noises, one in the driveline and simple clutch rattle, (do car clutches rattle?) but I now think its one in the same.From under the vehicle its either coming from the transfer or gearbox, hard to be sure. Tailshafts are greased, no vibration to be felt and situation is normal, except for the sound.Have done a few thousand klicks since I first noticed it and it isnt getting any worse but its bothering me alll the same.Vehicle has only done 70000kms, any ideas??

If the rattle goes away when you depress the clutch it will likely be gearbox input shaft bearing. If the rattle starts when you depress the clutch it is likely to be thrust bearing.
You shouldnt have lost a bearing this early in its life but it is possible. Have you had it in water?
Does yours have the dual mass flywheel? Older DMF sometimes have a bit of rattle, but again very early in life for this to occur.

the clutch can rattle but its very very rare and doesnt fit your symptom list.
your symptom list fits a shot input bearing on the gearbox. (as previously mentioned.

yep.
odds on for gearbox out and rebuild, If you're lucky and it is the clutch then youve already got the box out.
PITA if you do an engine lift suspecting the clutch and it turns out to be the box.
You can do the front bearings in SOME boxes with the engine out but I dont reccomend it.

all the usual suspect....
bad manufacture, bit of crap got caught up in it, bad casting, it doent like you.
it may not even be the bearing or the clutch, it could be something stupid like the throwout bearing carrier has got a defect and its rattling against the throw out fork.
The worst case scenario is that it IS the bearing so thats what you shoot at and if you find something different on the way in then its all good. if its not then you havent sent good money downrange.

AT REST
Very lightly take up the play (only) on the clutch pedal and if the noise stops, then starts again when you take your foot off the pedal it is more likely the clutch throwout/ release bearing.
Check that you have the correct freeplay in the clutch pedal, Regards Frank.
how long will the gear bag input shaft bearing last with that noise going on? seems to go away when warmed up?

assuming it is the input bearing (I dont think its the throw out bearing because thats disengaged when the clutch is out and only works when you have your foot on the clutch) it could last forever like it is or it could die tomorrow.
The one in brians lt85 should have given up several thousand K's before I got my hands on it to fix it so theres some proof that they keep working long past dead but they take more stuff with them when they go.
