I doubt that the loose battery terminal would cause this. If it was that bad you would have cranking problems.
Dave.
Hi all just joined bought a series 2 TD5 auto discovery, Luv it. Also think the web site is fantastic & very helpful.
However, This morning when I got up to go to the shop. Battery light stayed on after she started, New Battery fully charged. Got the meter out and have 12.7 volts without engine running, start engine and have 11 volts. Conclusion Dead alternator?
On further investigation found pos terminal loose, wondering if this caused the problem, Think I read something in one of the threads relating to this. Think that when the battery was replaced just before I bought it it was not done up all that well.
I have found a repairer on the web site who will have it fixed in a day and will also give me a loan car. Jobson in Carlton. Would have a go at it myself but need the vehicle for a camping trip this weekend.
Think it's more likely a case of bad luck and it was time for the alt to die but any feed back would be good

Thanks Dave Didn't think so either but you never know with English electrics so I thought I would ask anyway
Just replaced the alternator on SWMBO's D2. Cost me $1200 plus fitting at LR dealer. Turns out the alternator wasn't busted in the first place. Got a good second hand one if you want to PM me.
Deano
check all the earths and the main connector on the back of the alternator.

Now Im really going to have to go bush If it costs me that much will have to go and hide for a while while the girlfriend cools off. The quote to fix it was a little over $500.00, hope that stays the same.
Found a humourous entry on this web site entitled How Do You Know You Own a Land Rover, I think I have a new line to add
"It's getting repaired before you fill the fuel tank up for the first time"
(I still Like it).
If not I will give you a call
Thanks
PS I priced a new one today and it was around $600.00 plus labour(from Local Auto Elec, who looked like he did not want the job).
He also told me it is the same alternator as fitted to late model Hi Lux, this might be worth looking into??????
Thanks Blknight I did all that with the help of my tame auto elec and we both came to the same conclusion It just died and needs pulling out and fixing. He tells me he has done a few and the best I can hope for is a simple rebuild, bits and labour $200.00 to $300.00. Worst case new alternator. Plus the labour.$??.00
If I had a garage that it fitted into (Its raining here) and I had not promised my partner a weekend away I would be out there right now pulling it apart, Think I will ask for a workshop manual for Christmas.
Thanks adonuff
My strong recommendation after 3.5 years experience working at a Land Rover Dealer is don't muck around rebuilding the alternator.
Fit a new genuine part. Do the job once and do it right.
I agree, rebuilding parts is only if your stuck or have a second vehicle to get around in.I would make totally sure it is stuffed,I replaced my defender unit a month ago,$299 and it was not the problem. Pat
Thanks to all for the good avice I have a new alt being fitted at the moment. The problem was due to oil leaking into the alt from above causing the commutator and the brushes to self distruct. The oil leaks are also getting fixed.
I also discovered you can drive it for about 30 klms with out an alternator on a good battery only touble was the repair place was 33klm. Good thing I joined the RACV.
Thanks to all adonuff
