    Engineering for larger tyres.

I'm going to keep this simple without a story behind it but I've come up against a problem.

My D1 was lifted and had 33 inch tyres put on it. All of this was engineered and seemed legal. It clearly states in the report the new tyre size etc.

Recently someone purchased the vehicle off me and has been told that their is no legal way to have larger tyres then 31 inch on the Disco even if it is engineered for them. This person was told this by the relevant authority i.e. the RTA and also local engineers.

Does any one know if this is correct? Or have any information that could assist? It just did not sound right to me.

Also, the engineer who did the work has been taken off the list for accepted engineers through the RTA etc... So they quite well may of been dodgy. There goes $900 bucks down the drain!

    That is incorrect.

You cant run a 33 legally without an engineering report from an RTA signatory, and this has to be submitted to the RTA with a new blue slip and then the report number recorded onto the registration papers. Once this has been done the 33's are now the legal size for that vehicle and you can't deviate from it without engineering approval.

If the engineers report isn't marked on the paper, then the process has not been completed and the approval process is incomplete.

It needs to be clarified that it is with an engineering report - it is only without a report that you cant run even a 31.

No, not yet. We still operate under the Nov03 RTA guidelines

Okay, sorry... I was not clear. The vehicle moved interstate. In to the ACT. I thought they must of still been the RTA but maybe not. Does it moving in to the ACT make a difference?

And thanks for your response Slunnie.

In NSW I'm sure the vehicle was legal. The enginnering report number was on the rego etc.

Ahh - Engineers reports from one state are usually worthless in another state. E.g. those tyres are illegal in QLD, the engineer's report means nothing.

Thanks Isuzurover. I was aware of this but infact what I found out was that if the engineer is on the certified list which he was once upon a time then it is a national list. But this doofus got himself knocked off for being a naughty boy so that's what invalidated it. But this is neither here nor there anyway for the time being.

So I guess my new question is.... Are 33 inch tyres illegal on a Disco in the ACT with engineering approval or is it true that it can't be engineered?

The guy who bought it knew he'd have to have it re-engineered because of the engineer being knocked off the list but he's now told their is no way it can be done legally.

That's as maybe, but in QLD (for example), you are allowed max. +25mm in diameter over the original size (4x4 with beam axles). No ifs, no buts, regardless of whether you have an engineer's report or not.

I would have thought ACT and NSW would have had the same rules though.

EDIT - this may help? http://www.rego.act.gov.au/assets/PD...0the%20ACT.pdf

    Thanks Isuzu.... That's interesting.

I know that in NSW the vehicle is legal but.... it's this interstate business. I get the feeling ACT must have the same rules as QLD.

Not quite - a quick read of the above link says that the ACT have already adopted the NCOP. IRC, that you are allowed to go +50mm on a beam-axled 4x4. However, I believe it states 50mm total lift. How much body and spring lift does the vehicle have?

EDIT - can he register the vehicle in NSW???
