    Calling all diff experts

    Hi Guys,

    I placed a (series) Stage 1 front diff in my 2a several months ago and apart from the front prop shaft rubbing due to the front end sitting to low all went well.

    I put it in 4wd the other day and some horrible clicking sounds came from the front end have been told that the uni joints need replacing.

    Prior to buying the diff I was exposed to the combined knowledge of around 20,000 years by people who know an incredible amount on the subject (thanks, rangir rover and, lotz-A-Landies,)

    This is just a general fact finding mission in which direction I can go. end state that I end up with a strong reliable front end and an increase of knowledge.

    does any one know (ball park what it would cost to put in a locker with a couple of those Hi-tough axles)? would it be worth the effort.

    Is the Stage 1 diff much stronger than the old standard one? do I really need to do more than replacing the UJs? I'm assuming this is pretty simple.

    Any general thoughts on the subject would be great. any links to a step by step guide to rebuilding a front end ( preferably with photos) would be fantastic.

    And before you all scream do a search I have and every time I push the button it tells me to wait 55 seconds. Ho hum.

    Tim, you know that the Stage 1 diff is a 3.54 ratio and IIa's all came out with 4.7. It sounds like your ratios are different from front to rear.

    I agree with Slunnie but I suspect you might have a combination of the wrong ratio AND a dodgy Uj in there somewhere or if someones done a retrofit of CV's into the housing a dodgy CV.

    theres a couple of other things It could be. since Im not planning much this weekend and its too hot during the day to do most of the things I Am planning to do you're welcome to pop over and we'll do a turns check on the diffs and have a quick play with the driveline.

    the stage one diff is essentially the same diff as in the normal front end of a rover. but a 6 gear can be fitted its just a matter of finding one.

    I also advocate that unless your used to driving with a locked front end that something like and LSD or detroit truetrack/soft lock might be a better option as it doesnt overly change the steering performance and is easier on the axles.

    The rear diff is a Saulsbury 3:54 with a manual MacNamara Diff lock.

    Dave thanks for the reply could you PM me a phone number Id like to drop over I like talking Rovers, just none of my mates can see the attraction.

    Nothing in the old girl is original which is I guess the attraction, evolution.
