Thread: what ratio transfer gears would suit a stage 1 v8?

It all depends what you want to do with the stage 1 it was originally undergeared to 1.336:1 due to the braking limitations on the positive it will tow anything.
The upgrade is not expensive but you could use .996 /1.000 /1.113 /1.123 or 1.174 do your calculations and take your pick.
Beware a Stage 1 can be dangerously quick with its drum brakes.
You can flog the high range gears in the upper range for not a lot from old Range Rovers

Just a suggestion if you wanted to do it a bit cheaper;

you could try taller tires.

Or even swap the LT95 for a Rangie one.

This will help with the gearing but will also make the drum brakes work a lot harder.

Rangie LT95's are only worth a few hundred at best these days so this would probably be a cheaper option.

BTW, your stage one looks almost identical to my V8 110!

You could always try an overdrive if you can get one.

Be wary of just putting a Rangie LT95 in it they have a different output shaft and setup on the front. (the housing is physically shorter)
4x4 in Melbourne will sell you the high ratio gear set but it can be done quite cheaply by just using Rangie gears.
Oh and yes you can remove your LT95 front output and put it on a Rangie box.

I have a box here from a stage 1 which has a spacer on the front output shaft insted of a longer casing and front out put im not sure of the ratio but i have a few LT95's mostly rangie ones if were me id fit either the late 4 speed rangie ratio .996 to 1 or the next one up 1.112 to 1

I think the 0.996 will be the go, I will still allways have low range if need be.I'd rather just change the transfer gears as getting the box out is a mission! and I can only have the car down for a couple of days at a time(work sucks!) and it's the only one I have. I will have to track some of these down, know anyone that wants to sell the 0.996:1 matched set? I have tried several of the better known land rover shops, all out, next stop uk! I dont want it to go fast, just better on fuel and engine life. On another note how do you reckon the springs would go, reset with a couple of leafs removed for a softer ride and better articulation?
