    Need advice.

    Hi all,
3 things. 1. what grade of oil should i use in my 99 defender gear box and transfer case. i have some castrol multi trax in the garage. Will it do?
    2. If i block off the EGR system, will it lead to high exhaust temp and or raised engine temp? Will it give a performance gain or better fuel consumption?
Do i need to fill the swivels with oil or grease the CV's. My car seems to be on a change point (Sept 99) I have a Haynes manuel but its unspecified.

    Thanks

    Nino

First off is it a Tdi or Td5 Defender? The Tdi's finished production in 98 but if its like mine it has a 1998 VIN and a 1999 compliance plate. Also I've found a few Td5 model bits on mine. 98 VIN ends WAxxxxxx.

Secondly get the RAVE CD. This is the workshop manual and much better than the Hayne's manual. You can buy it from the markets section at the top of the forum.

(I'll get shot down by someone or other with a different opinion) If its a Td5 - Castrol Magnatec is equivalent to the recommended oil. You can also use this in the Tdi, but I tend to use Penrite HPR Diesel as its a bit cheaper.

In the Tdi gearbox is ATF Dexron II but there's a few posts that suggest this has been changed so it pays to dig further. Transfer case and Diff's use EPX 80/90. You can go to Syntranx in the T'fer case as its a high temp synthetic, but its 3x the price.

Swivel houses are greased since mid-late 90's.
