Thread: Removing a jammed key tumbler mechanism

I know this is probably going to be a really stupid question but... have you tried turning the wheel the small amount it will travel and turning the key whilst holding the wheel turned that little bit, quite often I can't turn the key whilst wheel locked unless i turn the wheel the little bit to release the pressure off it?

I think this is the same problem I had? I went to bunnings returned to vehicle and couldnt turn the key in the ignition.

You wont get the tumbler out in the vehicle. It is secured with a type of pin that needs to be drilled out in the vice, they are not really designed to be servicable.

There are two security bolts on top of the steering column (dome heads that the hex bolt snaps off at a certain torque when installed) that secure the igntion switch. use a chisel to tap a slot in them then unscrew with a screwdriver. (replace the bolts with allen key type when you reinstall). the ignition barrel assembly will just lift out.(after you undo the electrics etc).

It wont matter that the steering lock is on, it is built into the barrel and will easily come off once you unbolt the two security bolts. (you will be able to drive the car again with out the barrell installed, just hit the remote key to disable security then use the key/falt blade screwdriver to turn the black plastic ignition switch.

I orginally took the barrel to the locksmith who tried to repair it, but they are a **** of a barrrel and I got 4 weeks out of the repaired barrel before it started to play up again. The locksmtih said they are extremely difficult to service.

I was qouted $700 for a new d2 lock. I ended up with a new D1 lock from a supplier in Tasmania on Ebay for $150. Now i have two keys (one for the ignition and one for the doors which has the remote as well.)

When I can be bothered i will get the switch changed to match the original key by the locksmith.

Just an update. Went to my local locksmith and he removed the entire steering lock, etc. He then replaced the tumbler keys (?) and put everything back together for $88. Original key works fine and I just came back from a trip to Gold Coast and return to Central Coast without any dramas.

Reckon $88 was a good price too!

I have a new problem now, see new thread on "TD5 radiator fan pulley" but thats a different story....
